Wharekauhau enjoys a dual role, both as a working sheep farm and Wellington’s most exclusive country estate.

The main lodge enjoys a well deserved reputation for the quality of its gourmet cuisine and fine wines. A welcoming ambience is felt throughout its 12 luxurious guest suites. Housed in charming cottages dotted about the grounds, they feature four-poster beds and open fireplaces.

Horseriding, 4WD farm safaris and wine trails all feature in stays here, with a gym, heated indoor pool and tennis court available onsite.

Accommodation

Luxury accommodation at Wharekauhau is provided in self-contained cottages. Designed for privacy and comfort, they are perfect for honeymooners. Dotted throughout the estate, the cottages house guest suites and offer superb ocean views. Natural materials are used throughout, including clay tiles, pebble mosaics, rich New Zealand wool carpeting, cotton bed linen and hemp curtains.

Chateau Wellington is a 4,600sq ft three-bedroom house offering the ultimate in privacy and luxury with spectacular views of Palliser Bay. All three bedrooms have an ensuite bathroom with separate shower and claw foot bath, gas fireplace and air-conditioning. The house has a large open plan living area with gas fireplace, full kitchen and dining area. Fully air-conditioned, the house is located just one kilometre from Wharekauhau Lodge, with a 4WD vehicle available for guests.

Wharekauhau's menu changes to reflect the seasons and features New Zealand classics such as rack of lamb, venison, pigeon breast, crab broth and crayfish. Local flavours are a highlight - with an award winning selection of local wines, including Palliser Estate, Ata Rangi, Martinborough Vineyard and Murdoch James. Kapiti cheese and Olivo extra virgin olive oil are just a few examples of local produce used.

Recreation

Day helicopter tours allow guests to view some of the most breathtaking scenery, including Abel Tasman National Park’s coastal paradise and the Marlborough Sounds.

For those in need of relaxation, massages, facials and beauty treatments are all available.
